Our Bands

With eight bands covering a range of styles - from classical and film music to blues, rock and funk - there's something to interest all musicians at the Music Players' Society. We welcome students and post-grads from both Sheffield universities and we don't audition - so everybody is welcome.

Big Band

Swing, jazz, perhaps a little improv. A traditional Big Band playing some of the highlights of the Golden Era. Tuesdays 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Blues Band

Think Blues Brothers, only better. A powerful set full of some of the most famous blues and soul covers in history. Mondays 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Boomwhacker Group

Sheffield's answer to "Stomp"! Boomwhacker Group leads our volunteering efforts and runs workshops perfect for events such as children's playgroups. Thursdays, 5:45 - 7:00 pm

Clarinet Ensemble

Clarinet Ensemble is a group suitable for clarinets of all shapes and sizes. We play a range of styles - everything from jazz, classical, folk, pop or whatever we can get our hands on! Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Concert Band

The society's more classical offering. Expect a mix of movie themes and showtunes, with some popular classical music thrown in too. Wednesdays 7:00 - 9:00 pm


Our Friday Night Jazz Ensemble, full of the best improv the university has to offer, with a cool mix of jazz, swing and funk. Fridays 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Rock Band

With a range of styles from classic rock and pop, to punk and indie rock, there's something for everyone from this fantastic covers band. Thursdays 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Sax Group

A slightly smaller group, our sax group have a selection of ragtime, folk and jazzy tunes for saxophones of all sizes. Tuesdays, 5:45 - 7:00 pm

String Ensemble

After a hietus, the society’s String Ensemble is BACK! Expect to play a range of classical repertoire from the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert as well as some more modern arrangements. Thursday, 6:30 - 8:00 pm
